Cherry blossoms hold a special place in the hearts of many in Japan.
They bloom for just about a week each year, but their fleeting beauty is what makes them so deeply cherished. Some enjoy quiet moments of reflection beneath the petals, while others gather in lively groups to celebrate the season together.
I wandered from Shinjuku Central Park to Joenji Temple, Shinjuku Gyoen, and along the Kanda River, tracing the presence of spring in the heart of Tokyo. In Shinjuku Central Park especially, hanami — cherry blossom viewing picnics — brought a festive and memorable atmosphere. The blossoms were also beautifully lit up at night.
Despite the crowds and constant motion, the sight of sakura in full bloom brings a rare stillness — a momentary pause in the city’s restless rhythm.
Captured with the GR III, these images reflect the layered beauty of Shinjuku during cherry blossom season.
