I visited the “Martin Margiela at KUDAN HOUSE” exhibition in Kudanshita, Tokyo. The venue, Kudan House, is a historic residence originally completed in 1927 as the Yamaguchi Bankichi Residence, and is now registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. This time, I explored and photographed Martin Margiela’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan with the GR IV in hand.
Margiela’s works deconstruct the framework of clothing itself, revealing the structures and anonymity that lie beneath them. In contrast, the architecture of Kudan House presents a quiet and restrained presence, carrying traces of Japan’s post-earthquake reconstruction era. The tension between these two elements gave the space its distinctive atmosphere. The building, layered with history, quietly resonated with Margiela’s installations, further emphasizing the sense of presence and emptiness within the works.
Inside the exhibition, the interior space itself was composed as an extension of the works, where light, materials, and even traces of everyday life emerged as part of the installation. I had originally wanted to visit the building itself, so being able to experience both Kudan House and Margiela’s works simultaneously felt like an exceptionally rare opportunity.
Photography was permitted throughout the exhibition as long as other visitors were not visible in the frame. As a personal record of the experience, I leave here the photographs taken with the GR IV.
For this series, I used the GR IV’s “Hard Monotone” image setting to capture both Margiela’s works and the spaces of Kudan House in which they were placed.■

東京・九段下にある「マルタン・マルジェラ 九段ハウス展」を訪れた。会場となった九段ハウスは、1927年に山口萬吉邸として竣工した歴史的建築であり、現在は登録有形文化財にも指定されている。今回は、この空間を舞台に開催された、マルタン・マルジェラの日本初となる大規模個展を、GR IVを手に撮影した。
マルジェラの作品は、衣服という枠組みを解体しながら、その背後にある構造や匿名性を浮かび上がらせていく。一方で、九段ハウスの建築は、震災復興期の空気を残した静謐で端正な佇まいを見せている。その対比によって、空間には独特の緊張感が生まれていた。歴史を積み重ねてきた建築は、マルジェラのインスタレーションと静かに呼応しながら、作品の持つ気配や余白を際立たせていた。
館内では、室内空間そのものが作品と連続するように構成されており、光や素材、生活の痕跡までもが展示の一部として立ち現れていた。もともとこの建築自体を見学したいと思っていたこともあり、九段ハウスとマルジェラの作品を同時に体験できたことは、極めて貴重な機会だったように思う。
館内は、他の来場者が写り込まない範囲で自由に撮影が許可されていた。あくまでも個人的な体験の記録として、ここにGR IVで撮影した写真を残しておく。
