Street Snap #52 Makishi Market Area, Naha, Okinawa

From Kokusai Street, a well-known tourist destination in Naha, Okinawa, stepping just a little off the main road reveals the Makishi market area. In this district, multiple shopping arcades intertwine and extend into one another, forming a complex, almost maze-like structure. I walked through and documented the area, from the busy main streets filled with visitors to the quieter back alleys just beyond them.

Scenes where newly opened shops stand beside long-established stores feel as if layers of time have accumulated without interruption. Vegetation shaped by the warm climate, vivid signboards, goods displayed in dense and unstructured ways, and the presence of people moving through the space all merge together, creating a unique and saturated atmosphere. It carries an organic, unpredictable rhythm that differs from the order of more structured urban environments.

At the end of the walk, I climbed up to a small hill in the adjacent Kibogaoka Park. The stillness that unfolds beyond the intricate network of streets, along with the natural elements characteristic of Okinawa, sharply contrasts with the liveliness experienced just moments before.

For this series, I experimented with the newly introduced “Cinema (Yellow)” image control on the GR IV. Through this color profile, I aim to capture the market area of Okinawa with a subtly nostalgic texture. ■

沖縄県那覇市の観光地である国際通りから一歩奥へ入ると、牧志の商店街が広がっている。この一帯には、いくつもの商店街が絡み合うように連なり、複雑な構造を形づくっている。観光客で賑わう表通りから、少し外れた路地裏の通りまで歩き、記録した。

新しい店舗と古くから続く店が隣り合う風景には、時間の層がそのまま積み重なっているような感覚がある。温暖な気候で育つ植栽、鮮やかな看板、雑多に並ぶ商品、行き交う人々の気配が混ざり合い、この場所特有の濃密な空気を生み出していた。整然とした都市とは異なる、どこか有機的で、予測できないリズムがそこにはあった。

最後に、隣接する希望が丘公園の高台へと上った。入り組んだ商店街を抜けた先に広がる静けさと、沖縄らしい自然が、先ほどまでの喧騒との対比を際立たせる。

今回は、GR IVに新しく搭載された「シネマ調（イエロー）」のイメージコントロールを試みた。沖縄の商店街を、どこかノスタルジックな質感として記録している。（→note詳細を読む）■
