Street Snap #65 Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, Okinawa

I visited Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, a World Heritage Site in Nakagusuku Village, Okinawa. This gusuku castle was built beginning around the 14th century, and in 1853 an expedition from Commodore Perry’s fleet also visited the site and is said to have highly praised its sophisticated stonework.

Walking through the ruins, what struck me most was not simply their historical significance, but the form of the stone walls themselves. Rather than enclosing the site in straight lines, the walls curve gently along the terrain and overlap in layers, changing dramatically depending on where they are viewed from. The texture of the stacked stones and their contrast with the open sky above were also particularly striking.

The sunlight was intense on the day of my visit, casting deep shadows across the uneven surfaces and curves of the stone walls. The strong light made their outlines and overlapping forms more distinct, bringing the shapes of Nakagusuku Castle Ruins into even sharper relief.

For this series, I chose the Hard Monotone Image Control on the GR IV. Its strong contrast clearly emphasized the light and shadow created across the ruins by Okinawa’s intense sunlight.

沖縄県中城村にある世界遺産、中城城跡を訪れた。14世紀頃から築かれたグスクで、1853年にはペリー艦隊の探検隊もここを訪れ、その精巧な石積みを高く評価したという。

実際に歩いてみると、歴史的な遺跡であること以上に、まず石垣の形そのものが強く印象に残った。直線的に囲うのではなく、地形に沿って緩やかにカーブする石垣が幾重にも重なり、見る位置によってその形が大きく変わる。積み重ねられた石の質感と、その上に広がる空との対比も印象的だった。

訪れた日は日差しが強く、石垣の凹凸や曲線には深い影が落ちていた。強い光によって石垣の輪郭や重なりがより明確になり、中城城跡の造形が一層際立って見えた。

今回は、GR IVのイメージコントロールに「ハードモノトーン」を選んだ。沖縄の強い日差しが城跡に生む光と影を、ハードモノトーンの強いコントラストでくっきりと際立たせた。（→noteで詳細を読む）
