Street Snap #64 Azabudai Hills and Tokyo Tower

I visited Azabudai Hills, a newly completed development near Tokyo Tower. Like Roppongi Hills and Toranomon Hills, it is one of Mori Building’s large-scale redevelopment projects bearing the “Hills” name.

I began by photographing Tokyo Tower from nearby, then walked on toward Azabudai Hills. The low-rise section, designed by London-based Heatherwick Studio, is characterized by frames that trace organic curves, creating a distinctive architectural design rarely seen in Japan. The buildings are arranged three-dimensionally across a site with varying elevations, surrounded by a landscape rich in greenery. I could also see Tokyo Tower reflected in the glass of the buildings.

From a little farther away, the architecture appears as part of a landscape integrated with the planting and changes in ground level. Up close, carefully considered details come into view. From small scale to large, the impression changes depending on where you stand, giving the architecture many different aspects to explore.

This series was photographed some time ago using the RICOH GR III rather than the GR IV, with the “Standard” image control applied. I wanted to capture not only the newly completed architecture itself, but also the people walking through and gathering there, preserving the scenery of Azabudai Hills and Tokyo Tower as a series of snapshots.

東京タワーの近くに新しく完成した麻布台ヒルズを訪れた。六本木ヒルズや虎ノ門ヒルズなどと同じく、「ヒルズ」の名を冠した森ビルによる大規模再開発のひとつである。

まずは東京タワーの近景から撮影を始め、そのまま麻布台ヒルズへと歩いた。ロンドンで設立されたヘザウィック・スタジオがデザインした低層部は、有機的な曲線を描くフレームが特徴的で、日本ではあまり見かけないデザイン性の高い建築だった。高低差のある敷地に立体的に建物がつくられ、緑の多いランドスケープや、ビルのガラスに反射する東京タワーを見ることもできた。

少し離れて見ると、植栽や敷地の高低差と一体になったランドスケープとして建築が見え、近くで見ると、細部までこだわり抜かれたディテールが目に入る。小さなスケールから大きなスケールまで、見る場所によって印象が変わり、建築としての見どころが多かった。

このシリーズは少し前に撮影したもので、RICOH GR IVではなくGR IIIを使用し、イメージコントロールには「スタンダード」を適用している。新しく完成した建築そのものだけでなく、そこを歩き、集う人々の姿も含めて、麻布台ヒルズと東京タワーのある風景をスナップとして残した。（→noteで詳細を読む）
