I visited the exhibition “Filling the Void of the Forest” by the artist unit Rintaro Hara + Yu Hara, held at Hiroshi Hara + Atelier Φ Architectural Institute in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Atelier Φ stands quietly in a residential neighborhood between Shibuya and Daikanyama, its exterior covered with ivy, exuding a sense of time flowing gently. It was also the place where Hiroshi Hara spent his later years as a base for creation.
The interior embodies Hara’s architectural language, with its layered spatial composition and distinctive windows and openings that draw in natural light. The interplay of light and shadow, inside and outside, created a resonant atmosphere. Details of the structure, the texture of materials, and the intentional use of spatial voids all echoed with the exhibition.
The works of Rintaro Hara + Yu Hara further amplified the qualities of the building, allowing the pieces to stand out all the more vividly. What was precious was not only encountering the artworks themselves, but also experiencing the very space that framed them.
Photographed with the GR IV, the images quietly capture the textures of the space, the shifting light, and the overlapping layers—recording with certainty the moment where architecture and art intertwined. ■
