Street Snap #50 Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum

I visited the Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. This was the atelier and residence where Taro Okamoto lived and continued his work for more than forty years. Photography is permitted throughout the museum, and this time I explored the space with the GR IV in hand.

Okamoto’s works possess an intensity that seems to reject established frameworks and balance. In contrast, the building itself, designed by architect Junzo Sakakura, presents a composed and restrained form. The tension between these two elements gives the site its distinctive atmosphere. The carefully ordered architecture functions as a “frame” that contains the works, acting as a device that holds back their imminent sense of explosion.

Inside the museum, Okamoto’s artworks are interwoven with life-sized figures, an atelier bearing traces of his creative process, and a garden enveloped in greenery. Together, they create a vivid presence, as if Okamoto were still working here even now.

For this series, I used the GR IV’s “Vivid” color image setting. By emphasizing the contours of color, I sought to record more clearly the relationship between Okamoto’s ideas and the space that absorbed and sustained them. ■

東京・南青山にある岡本太郎記念館を訪れた。ここは、岡本太郎が40年以上にわたって生活し、制作を続けたアトリエ兼住居である。館内は自由に撮影が許されており、今回はGR IVを手に、その空間を撮影した。

岡本太郎の作品は、既存の枠組みや均衡を拒むような強度をもっている。一方で、この建物は建築家・坂倉準三によって設計された、端正で静かな構えを見せている。その対比が、この場所に独特の緊張感を生んでいるように感じられた。整えられた建築は、今にも爆発しそうな作品群を受け止める「額縁」として機能し、その爆発を抑制する装置となっていた。

館内には、岡本太郎の作品群だけでなく、等身大の人形、制作の痕跡が残るアトリエ、そして緑に包まれた庭が連なっている。まるで、彼がいまもこの場所で制作を続けているかのような、生々しい気配が漂っていた。

今回は、GR IVのカラーイメージ「ビビッド」を用い、色彩の輪郭を際立たせることで、岡本太郎の思想と、それを受け止めてきた空間との関係性を、より鮮明に記録した。（→noteで詳細を読む）■
