Kabukicho, one of Tokyo’s most well-known nightlife districts, comes alive after dark with a vivid mix of locals and international visitors. This series aims to document the current state of Shinjuku’s Kabukicho. It is a place where neon lights, nightlife, and cultural contrasts come together in public view.
Unlike other neighborhoods, Kabukicho does not invite careful or deliberate shooting. Instead, it calls for quick reactions, like raising the camera in an instant or shooting without a viewfinder. The resulting blur, imbalance, and spontaneity feel true to the district’s energy.
Captured in black and white with the GR III, these images reflect the raw and restless spirit of a neighborhood that constantly moves at its own rhythm. ■
