Large scale redevelopment is reshaping the Shinjuku Station area, and its cityscape changes from day to day.
The main building of Odakyu Department Store has already been demolished, opening a wide stretch of sky above Shinjuku. The iconic slope at the west exit, designed by Junzo Sakakura, is also in the midst of being dismantled. This is a place where many layers of history have accumulated, including the Shinjuku riot of 1968.
It will take many more years for the entire redevelopment to be completed. Yet I feel that this shifting process itself deserves to be documented. The true character of Shinjuku seems to appear more vividly in its present state of constant transformation.
For this series, I used the Cinema (Yellow) Image Control on the GR IV. Its slightly nostalgic tone adds a quiet depth to the scenes of Shinjuku as it undergoes redevelopment. ■
