Street Snap #37 Takanawa Gateway City Opening, Tokyo, GR IV

In September 2025, I visited NEWoMan Takanawa, a shopping facility directly connected to Takanawa Gateway Station. It sits within Takanawa Gateway City, a redevelopment project built on what used to be a railway yard. The entire neighborhood is not yet completed.

Walking around inside and outside the buildings, I was struck by its sheer scale. The place exudes a sense of luxury, and for me it felt like somewhere you would visit on a special day, offering a touch of the extraordinary.

From the terraces you can look out over Tokyo’s waterfront skyline, with clusters of high-rise apartment towers by the bay and the distant span of the Rainbow Bridge. Even while inside, the facility feels connected to Tokyo’s futuristic and evolving cityscape.

Architecturally, there are many kinds of finishing materials and details in the design. It was almost like walking through a trade show for interiors. Not in a chaotic way, but rather as a distilled expression of current design trends.

I felt fortunate to be able to capture the beginning of this new “town” with my new camera, the RICOH GR IV. The textures of materials, the play of light filtering through and reflecting, and the movement of people came together in each frame, allowing me to preserve a fleeting moment of this place in snapshots. ■

2025年9月、高輪ゲートウェイ駅直結の商業施設「ニュウマン高輪」がオープンしたので訪れた。かつて操車場だった土地を再開発する「高輪ゲートウェイシティ」の一角で、街全体の完成はまだ先だ。

実際に建物内外を歩き回ると、その規模の大きさに驚かされた。全体として高級感が漂い、自分にとっては特別な日に訪れたくなるような非日常感があった。建物のテラスから外に目を向ければ、東京の湾岸のタワーマンション群やレインボーブリッジを遠望でき、施設の中にいながらも、東京の未来的な風景とつながっているように感じられた。

建築的には多彩な仕上げ材や意匠のバリエーションが盛り込まれており、まるでインテリアの見本市を巡っているかのようだった。決して雑多という意味ではなく、むしろ今のデザインのトレンドが凝縮されているように感じられた。

新しく生まれる「まち」の始まりを、自分にとって新しいカメラであるRICOH GR IVとともに記録できたのは嬉しいことだった。素材の質感、光の透過と反射、人の動き。それらをスナップとして残すことができた。■
